BIO
William C. Passodelis, Jr., excels in patent prosecution and portfolio management and has a wealth of experience in intellectual property counseling, litigation, and licensing. Bill drafts patent applications and represents clients before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He also guides clients in managing domestic and international patent portfolios by advising where and how to strategically file patent applications and tactically pursue divisional and/or continuation applications to optimize patent coverage and preserve opportunities while reducing costs. Bill counsels clients in various IP and patent matters, such as patent landscape reviews, non-infringement and validity opinions, trademark prosecution and portfolio management, and IP licensing, including technology, software, and open source licensing. He also has experience in patent litigation at U.S. Federal District Courts, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), and the International Trade Commission (ITC).
Bill’s practice covers a wide range of technology areas, including artificial intelligence (AI), encryption, data security, data privacy, information technology, financial technology, video coding, video conferencing, digital broadcasting, wireless communication, medical devices, autonomous vehicles, consumer electronics, consumer kitchen appliances, industrial machinery, robotics, batteries, power management, power distribution, optics, photonic integrated circuits, microscopy, spectroscopy, quantum computing, and quantum batteries. He is well-versed in the intricacies of subject matter eligibility under 35 U.S.C. § 101 and its relation to software and computer-related patents. Bill counsels clients on strategies for international IP protection, including Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) international applications, Hague Agreement international designs, Madrid Protocol international trademarks, and direct filings with foreign patent/IP offices.
Bill is the President of the Pittsburgh Intellectual Property Law Association (PIPLA), and he previously held the roles of Vice President, Secretary & Treasurer, Board of Managers, and Chair of the Social Activities Committee. He also teaches Introduction to Intellectual Property Law as a Special Faculty Adjunct Professor at Carnegie Mellon University.
