BIO
Ryan J. Miller advises clients on patent prosecution across a wide variety of industries with a particular focus on medical devices and consumer products. He works with clients to secure and protect valuable intellectual property, manage patent portfolios, and evaluate patent risk in competitive markets. His practice also includes patent searching, due diligence in transactional contexts, and strategic counseling to help clients navigate complex patent landscapes.
Ryan has substantial experience guiding clients through all stages of U.S. and international patent prosecution. He has led due diligence reviews and provided freedom-to-operate and invalidity analyses and searches in connection with product launches, acquisitions, and investments. He represents both petitioners and patent owners in post-grant proceedings, including Inter Partes Reviews before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) and reexaminations before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. His work spans a broad range of technologies, with a focus on innovations in medical devices and consumer products such as electron microscopes, ion beam instruments, and mass spectrometers.
Before entering private practice, Ryan served as a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, where he reviewed applications in the medical imaging processing and digital watermarking. This experience gives him a practical understanding of the USPTO’s internal processes, which he leverages to anticipate and address issues early in prosecution. Ryan has uses his background as a patent examiner in his role as Webb’s patent searching coordinator to provide valuable search results to clients with regard to patentability, invalidity, and freedom to operate searches.
